How to get your business on Google Maps

Published 2026-07-25 · 5 min read

You do not add a website to Maps, you add a business, and you do it through a Google Business Profile. Without that profile Maps does not know you, however good the site is.

Maps reads the profile, not the site

The first confusion we hear is "I have a website, why am I not on Maps". Because Maps shows businesses from Google Business Profile, and the website is just one field inside that profile. Until the profile exists and is verified, you are not on Maps. How to create one, step by step, is covered in a separate guide.

Address or service area

This decision changes how you look on Maps. If you have a place customers come to, you enter an address and get a pin at that exact location. If you travel to customers and have no storefront, you pick a service area: you list the towns or districts you cover, and the address stays private. A third option exists and is often missed: you have premises and you also travel. Then you enter the address and define a service area as well.

The pin has to be moved by hand

Google often drops the pin in the middle of a building or on the wrong side of the street, which for large buildings and courtyard entrances is a real problem: the customer arrives and cannot find the door. In the profile settings the pin can be dragged to the actual entrance. Do it once, then test the route from two directions.

The same details in every place

Name, address and phone must be identical on the profile, on the site, on social accounts and in every directory you appear in. Not "5 Kneza Milosa St." in one place and "Kneza Milosa 5" in another. Google compares those records and inconsistency weakens confidence in the location. If an old listing carries a wrong phone number, correct it or ask for its removal.

Duplicates are a common cause of invisibility

If someone created a profile for the same business earlier, or Google generated a record from public data, there are two entries for one place and they suppress each other. Search your business name on Maps before creating a new profile. If a duplicate exists, claim it or report it as a duplicate rather than creating a third.

Once the profile is right, the next step is ranking inside the local pack, which this piece covers. If you want the site and the profile working together, get in touch.

Common questions

Can I be on Maps without a website?

Yes. The profile works without one, though the website field helps both trust and ranking.

Why is my pin in the wrong place?

Google places it automatically. In the profile settings you can drag it to the correct entrance and save.

What if a listing for my business already exists?

Claim the existing listing instead of creating a new one, because duplicates reduce visibility.
